The Lake by Natasha Preston

UGH! Rating one of Natasha Preston's books this low makes me sick.

Unfortunately this is probably my least favorite of all of her books - I'm pretty sure I gave all the other ones 5 star reviews.

Quick Summary

Esme and her best friend Kayla are heading back to a camp they attended when they were kids but now as CITs (helping the counselors). But together they hold onto a secret from the past that ended with lot's of fire and unknown consequences. At the camp they start experiencing strange pranks that get more dangerous with time. Esme starts connecting dots with other CITs present that have secrets of their own and connecting them to summers ago. At the end - Esme decides to confront her past and the person terrorizing her and the camp, and it ends up deadly.

Characters

First off, I LOVE the name Esme - it's unique and cute. But I really do love Esme as a character. She stands up for herself, is independent, and has a caring nature. Her friend however, Kayla is completely the opposite of Esme - selfish, ignores the obvious, etc. Then Olly is another character I came to enjoy, unfortunately all these side character didn't get enough time or details about them so I feel like there is a lot left unsaid. Which sucks because I liked the characters.

Plot

Terrible, just terrible. Like I know they are younger and what they did was wrong but it was NOT THAT THRILLING or scary for that matter. Like they started a forest fire - not really "dark secret" material. Granted there was another person involved that got injured but I mean - not that crazy. BUT I will give Preston the benefit of the doubt and she made the antagonist psycho so I guess the petty revenge makes sense.

BUT THE ENDING Y'ALL

Like it was unexpected it was quick and non-stop crazy at the end!!!! Like it went 0-100% real quickly. This did end with a cliffhanger and super unhappy but like dang.... that's why I love Natasha Preston guys.

Overall - not the best of her books but she redeemed herself with the ending!!
