No One's Home by D.M. Pulley

This book is very hard to review, and not because it was bad or boring or crazy exciting... it was just so unique I don't think my review will do it justice.

Going into this book I thought it was going to be a paranormal ghost story but boy was I wrong! This book is a mystery full of secrets of the past, love, addiction, mental illness, etc. All coming from one location, a home in Ohio.

Quick Summary

The family this book focuses on is the Spielman family, who have moved from Boston. This family itself has many secrets but they have a son named Hunter, is slowly starts to find those secrets and the ones buried from the past.

There is another family of the Martin's and they are the 2nd most relevant family such as they have a couple kids living there that become relevant through out the entire story.

Benny and his mother is another family story and that one breaks my heart to the core.

The Rawlings family which is technically the first family and that was based back in the day when the prohibition was going on and the great depression happened.

Then finally there are a couple other stories thrown into the mix such as the religious group the Shakers, some drug addicted kids, and others.

Throughout the book you find out about the past and all the events that have taken place in the house.

Characters

Dang, there are so many characters so I will go into who I loved the most and hated the most.

Who I loved the most: I hate to admit it but I kind of like Margot, Benny, and Ava the most. Margot is shocking because she honestly seems like a terrible parent but after learning about her past, you kind of feel bad for her. Benny is just a poor kid that was dealt a bad hand but he had a mother who would do anything for him. Then Ava... there was actually a lot unsaid about her and her circumstance but I feel like this novel was almost based about her and the things she had to see and do.

Who I hated the most: Probably Myron and Mr. Martin (for obvious reasons I won't say). Myron annoyed the crap out of me and I never once felt bad for him. His addiction, actions, and fatherly and husbandly instincts were terrible and he pretty much deserved everything that happened to him. (especially what he did to Hunter)

Plot

This book is told in 4 different families point of views. Within those families, you get the POVs of everyone in that family. While is sounds confusing, the author did a fantastic job at making it very clear who was talking and the family and era the chapter talked about.

Overall, if you love a good book that contains a bunch of mysteries and that deal with everyday things that go on in the world... give it a shot. It might take a bit to finish it but it's a good read!
