It's funny you asked (and if you didn't, I'm going to tell you anyway) I never ever would have picked this book and I have no idea why but I've never heard about it until I received a free copy of the 2nd book in this series. So I obviously had to read the first one before I read the free copy I got and I am very happy I stumbled upon this series.
Also when I say series - I don't think the series are technically related... such as Jane's story in this book was only her story and the 2nd book is someone else's story about kidnapping. So it's a series of peoples traumas and somehow they relate between writing about it.... at least that's what I think.
Quick Summary
This book is about Jane who was kidnapped and she tells the story of her kidnapping and about after her kidnapping and her trying to settle back into her life. Jane is obviously struggling with coping with what happened to her and the people in her life just don't seem to understand - or care to understand - so it's making it harder for her. She talks about what happened in captivity and how it still is following her now in her life, she finds herself still following the rules of her captor - but that gives her a sense of comfort. Towards the end she comes to a better realization of what happened and the boy she encountered in her captivity. This book has friendship, sadness, family drama, grieving, happiness, and thrill with a huge twist at the end.
I usually hate books about self-help and the author does such a great job of keeping it fiction and putting so much emotion behind everything Jane is saying it makes you feel and understand for her and even her parents who honestly pissed me off in the beginning. This book also shows the parts of kidnapping that the media does talk about and how it's really not easy to readjust to your old life.
Characters
So there are a lot of important characters in this book. Jane is the main character and her feelings are realistic and emotional but also somewhat stubborn but considering what she went through it's ok. Then she has a best friend - who honestly wasn't my favorite person in the book... I feel like she wasn't supportive or understanding like her parents.
AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON HER PARENTS Y'ALL... like they are SO dysfunctional to begin with that it just got worse. The mother pretty much made the kidnapping about herself and thought ignoring what happened to her daughter was best. The dad wasn't really present at all mentally but physically he was. But what surprised me of the most is I actually felt bad for both of them toward the end, the author did such a great job trying to show the readers their side and that they were effected too. Then the last character is a boy she had a thing for before she was kidnapped and dang... he was understanding, he was sweet, he was patient, and honestly one of the best things for her.
Overall - this book was incredible and I finished it within one day. I am very excited to see what the second book entails and if there are snippets from Janes life or if it's completely different. Either way, I am excited and can't wait to see if the author holds up her worth!
