Fresh Scars by Donna Mumma

So this will not be a super positive review unfortunately - and I am not sure whether or not it's because of me and it's not my style or if it was actually not a great book... I guess y'all can make that decision for yourselves! (If you want to read it)

The ratings on Goodreads were like 4.6 Star averages but with only 20 reviews... so that tells me

A. Those people got sent books for free, and sometimes people suck up when that happens.

B. People who read it - loved it and other people who read it didn't like it enough to read a review.

Quick Summary

This book covers two sisters, Ivy and Asia, who had a very traumatic childhood at the hands of their mother, Veronica. In the book though, they are now older with very separate lives but have an opportunity for some cash if they go home and clean our their childhood one.. per mothers wishes. (Mother is currently in a coma due to a stroke) Both sisters have been through their fair share of a rough life but Asia is still struggling with her life as her mother still has a hold on her life. Together the sisters find out secrets their mother kept from them and hopefully rebuild their bond together.

Plot

So the genre of this book is supposed to be mystery/suspense but to me it was pretty far from either. The mystery or "big secret" the book contained was very predictable and I figured it out on page 20 I believe.

Characters

Ivy and Asia in the beginning - are super different from each other. Ivy is more strong willed and independent and wants to keep her life to herself (because it's perfect now). Asia lives alone in a secluded area in Tennessee with super bad OCD and other germ-phobia issues. She has panic attacks and nightmares. Asia hasn't been able to get over her childhood while Ivy pretty much has.

What irks me though is toward the end when they regain their sisterly bond... the decisions and thoughts they both have blend together and their personalities almost complete change. There is a lot of back and forth - due to Asia being kind of squirrely but...it's like they were different people by the end of the book. While change is good - this change was like she made new characters completely.

Overall - this book was OK. I felt obligated to give it 3 stars because the ratings were so high but I probably could have said 2 1/2. There were times were it was interesting and I was engaged but only for about 10 mins. It's just too boring to me and it felt more like a therapy session the entire book. If you like family drama/family healing themes you might enjoy this book a lot more.
